Isaiah 30:21 – “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”
Let’s talk about one of the most stress-inducing questions of your twenties:
Is this what I’m meant to do?
Should I take this job? Should I move? Should I stay? Should I change majors—again? Should I go to grad school or just fake confidence until retirement?
We slap the word “calling” on everything and then panic when it doesn’t come with clear instructions, a sign from Heaven, and a Canva mood board.
If you’ve ever prayed something like, “God, just TELL ME what to do,” with a touch of desperation and maybe a few tears (or, let’s be honest, some passive-aggressive silence), welcome. Happy to have you here.
We want clarity. We want certainty. We want Google Maps but for our purpose.
But God? He offers presence. A voice behind us. A nudge. A whisper that says, “This is the way. Walk in it.”
Honestly though, that whisper isn’t always convenient. It rarely comes on our timeline.
It doesn’t always align with the plan we had written out in our Notes app or what we told our parents we were doing so they wouldn’t freak out. Sometimes, it doesn’t even make sense until we’re five steps in and looking back.
But here’s the truth we often forget when we’re spiraling about our next step: God isn’t hiding your purpose like it’s some divine scavenger hunt. He’s a Shepherd, not a trickster. He wants to lead you.
So if you’re asking, “Is this what I’m meant to do?” and hearing crickets—pause. Breathe. Let’s reframe the question. Because maybe it’s not about figuring it all out, Maybe it’s about *walking it out—*with Him.
Here are a few things I’ve learned the hard way (and am still learning, lol):
1. Obedience > Outcome
Sometimes God cares less about what we do and more about how we do it—with humility, integrity, faithfulness, and a heart that stays near Him. You can glorify God in a boardroom or behind a coffee bar. Calling isn’t always about a job title. Sometimes it’s about character.
2. You Can’t Miss It If You’re Walking With Him
Isaiah 30:21 doesn’t say, “You’ll see a perfectly lit path with all the answers.” It says, “You’ll hear a voice behind you.” That means you’re already walking. Already moving. Already seeking. And as you go, He speaks. Not before every decision, but in the process.
3. God Uses Detours, Too
You didn’t “mess up your calling” because you changed directions or feel unsure. God isn’t limited by your zigzags. Sometimes the wrong road teaches us the right kind of trust. Sometimes delay builds dependence.
4. Purpose Isn’t a One-Time Discovery
You don’t find your “thing” and then never question it again. Purpose evolves. Seasons change. You’re allowed to grow, shift, pivot, and keep seeking. What mattered to you at 18 might not fuel you at 24. That’s not failure—it’s formation.
5. You’re Not Behind
Comparison is loud and trust is quiet. And while everyone else’s life might look polished and clear online, nobody really has it all figured out. You’re not late to your life. You’re exactly where God can meet you.
So if you’re in a season of question marks—unsure, restless, craving a neon sign from Heaven—here’s what I want to remind you: The voice you’re waiting to hear is still speaking.
You don’t need all the answers to take the next step. You don’t need a perfect plan to walk with purpose.
You just need to stay close enough to hear the whisper.
And when you do—whether it’s a quiet peace, a Scripture that hits different, a conversation that sparks clarity, or a holy nudge you can’t explain—you’ll know.
“This is the way. Walk in it.”
Even if your knees are shaking.
Even if you don’t have a five-year plan.
Even if you’re still figuring it out.
God is not asking for perfection. He’s asking for presence. So bring your questions. Bring your fear. Bring your doubt. Just walk—the vision God always sends me is Him running up to me, telling me to slow down, and telling me to walk with him. We are in no rush.
