God, What’s My Calling? – Proverbs 3:5

Proverbs 3:5 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

Let’s get this out of the way:

You don’t have to have your life figured out by 25.
Or 30.
Or ever, honestly.

If you’ve been staring at the ceiling asking, “God, what’s my calling?”—first of all, same.
Second of all, welcome. We all want to know what we were made for, what we’re supposed to do with this one wild ride of holy life. But the answer doesn’t usually show up on a neon billboard. It’s less “Aha!” moment, more “daily obedience meets divine direction” and a lot of other formal, big words.

When Calling Feels Like a Pop Quiz

Some days it feels like everyone else has their path paved while you’re still trying to figure out if you should turn left or cry into a pint of Ben & Jerry’s—which honestly is healing sometimes too for real.

You hear words like “purpose” and “passion” and suddenly feel like you’re behind—like you missed the memo on what your Big Life Assignment was supposed to be.
Do you take the job or turn it down?
Do you move or stay put?
Do you teach, write, counsel, lead, create, serve, stay home, go out, say yes, say no?

We keep thinking calling is this one giant leap, but most of the time—it’s a series of small, faithful steps in our everyday lives. Before we know it, and through lots of prayer, we are somewhere we didn’t anticipate to be.

Which brings us to Proverbs 3:5:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

This verse is annoyingly simple and deeply hard. Trust God. Don’t trust yourself. Cool cool cool.

But let’s be real: trusting God with your whole heart is no small thing when your brain is in full overthinking mode. It means loosening your grip on your five-year plan. It means admitting you don’t have all the answers. It means letting go of your obsession with certainty and choosing faith instead.

Trust > Clarity

Here’s a hard truth I’m learning:
God is more interested in growing your trust than giving you clarity.

Ugh. I know. But stay with me.

He’s not holding out on you. He’s inviting you in—into a deeper relationship, a deeper surrender, a deeper awareness that your calling isn’t just about what you do but who you are becoming.

And who you’re becoming? That matters more than your résumé, your timeline, or your LinkedIn bio ever will (greatest social media of all time).

Because calling isn’t just about the big things. It’s about being faithful in the small, secret, everyday things too.

  • Holding the door open.
  • Calling your grandma.
  • Babysitting your friend’s kids so she can breathe.
  • Writing when no one’s reading.
  • Studying when you’d rather sleep.
  • Praying even when you’re not sure it’s “working.”

These things matter.
This is holy ground.
You’re not “waiting to be used”—you already are.

But What Am I Supposed to Do?

If you’re like me, you want a checklist. A blueprint. A voice from the clouds saying, “Hey, here’s your calling. You’re going to be great at it.” And then proceeds to tell me how to take every step and the result of every step.

But God gives us something better: Himself.

And while that may not satisfy the part of you that wants control, it will satisfy the part of you that’s hungry for peace.

Proverbs 3:5 isn’t just a nice verse for your coffee mug. It’s a roadmap for the unknown.
When you don’t know what to do—trust Him.
When the future feels foggy—trust Him.
When doors close, friends leave, plans shift—trust Him.

Not halfway. Not with conditions. Not just on Sundays. With all your heart.

And here’s the promise tucked into verse 6 (you know I had to sneak that in):
“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
He will lead you. Maybe not how you expect. Maybe not with flashing signs. But He’ll do it faithfully. Quietly. Perfectly.

What You Can Do Today

If the question “What’s my calling?” is giving you spiritual whiplash, here’s what I want you to remember:

  1. You don’t have to know the whole path to take the next step.
Sometimes faith looks like showing up before you have the full map.
  2. Your calling isn’t a destination. It’s a direction.
It unfolds over time. It grows with you. It’s not one perfect choice—it’s a lifelong response to God’s voice.
  3. Trust trumps understanding. Every time.
Your plans might change. God’s presence won’t.
  4. If you’re walking with Him, you’re walking in purpose.
Even if you don’t feel “called,” you’re still chosen.
  5. Choose to follow God every single day.

So if you’re waiting on clarity, here’s my gentle nudge:

You might not get clarity today.
But you can have peace.
You can have trust.
You can have Jesus.

And that’s more than enough.

When the question rises again—“God, what’s my calling?”—you can answer it with a deep breath and a surrendered heart:

“I may not know where I’m going, but I know who I’m following.”

And that’s the whole point. Bada bing, bada boom, bazinga.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus"
Philippians 4:6-7
